Food wine (or beer) and friendships - Seeking Cumbria’s finest dining experience’

Pub Grub to Global Dining to Fine Dining

You do not need to come to every event; choose those which most appeal. Non-members and friends welcome. (Maximum 2 U3A events).

We aim for an easy-going, friendly group: distinctly non-stuffy. All restaurants/hotels are amongst the very finest in Cumbria.

Our hostesses greet you at the entrance and you will be made most welcome.

Happy to arrange a lift or travel companion.  Why not bring a friend?

November 2017

In July we found virtual perfection at The Inn on the Lake, Glenridding. Thanks to a glorious sunny day we took full advantage of the terrace, overlooking Ullswater, which opened from our private dining room. Wonderful food and extremely efficient, pleasant service.

September. Dining at The Samling proved so popular an additional date a week later was also fully booked. Exceptional food and fantastic views over Windermere from their new dining room.

October. We were treated to an Indian Banquet at Cinnamon Spice, Silverdale. Very good food and attentive service.

November. Thirty of us enjoyed traditional Pub Grub at The Black Labrador. Super meat pies.

CASTLE DAIRY (Kendal). Wed. 7th Feb. Beautifully refurbished after Storm Desmond. Head Chef Chris O'Callaghan. Private Event. Three courses coffee and petit fours £28.50.

THE PLOUGH (Lupton). Tues. 20th March. Eighteenth Century Coaching Inn. Head Chef Robert Stacey, formerly of Castle Dairy.

Three Courses £27.95 Two courses £22.95.

The Black Swan (Ravenstonedale). April. Excellent and Interestingly different themed lunch, 'Influences of Japanese food on British Cooking'

In May we dined at Lyth Valley Inn, a beautiful setting, excellent food, enjoyed by all. Lyth Valley Inn kindly donated Afternoon Tea for two including a bottle of prosecco to our free prize draw.

Friendly family run Indian Restaurant, excellent Trip Advisor. Opposite Gaskell Hall LA5 0RG. Special banquet £15 (cash only). Unlicensed, take own drinks; No corkage.

THE BLACK LABRADOR (Underbarrow). Mon. 6th Nov.

March 2017

In December we visited The Punch Bowl, Crosthwaite where 43 diners enjoyed excellent food. The Punch Bowl donated two free lunches or dinners to our free prize draw.

L'Enclume welcomed us on two dates in January. Rated as excellent by our diners. First class food and service from UK's No.1 Restaurant.

Set in 15 acres of grounds, on the shores of Ullswater with views extending over the Helvellyn mountain range.  Head Chef Mark Harris has worked in some of the worlds finest hotels including 2 Michelin star La Gavroche, 1 Michelin star Capital Hotel London and Le-Meridien Brussels. £32

Stunning new restaurant, recently opened, with views extending over Lake Windermere.  Head Chef Nick Edgar, protégé of Raymond Blanc, worked for 15 years at Raymond's famous 2 Michelin starred Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons Hotel.  Tasting Menu £45.
