What we do

Food wine (or beer) and friendships - Seeking Cumbria’s finest dining experience’

Pub Grub to Global Dining to Fine Dining

You do not need to come to every event; choose those which most appeal. Non-members and friends welcome. (Maximum 2 U3A events).

We aim for an easy-going, friendly group: distinctly non-stuffy. All restaurants/hotels are amongst the very finest in Cumbria.

Our hostesses greet you at the entrance and you will be made most welcome.

Happy to arrange a lift or travel companion.  Why not bring a friend?

November 2018

July. Blue Smoke on the Bay. We experienced the theatre of open fired cooking, great atmosphere, delicious and enjoyed by all.

September. Lindeth Howe. An excellent meal in very pleasant surroundings, including a most enjoyable talk by Stephen Broughton on the history of the house. Lindeth Howe kindly donated a prize for our free draw, afternoon tea for two.

October. The Old Stamp House. Ryan Blackburn didn’t disappoint, his food, as always, was fantastic. We hope to visit his newest venture Kysty in the spring.

October/November. Cottage in the Wood. 42 of us dined, in two visits, at the beautiful Cottage in the Wood, Braithwaite. Most of us travelled by coach and enjoyed a scenic journey admiring lakes and autumn colours prior to an outstanding lunch.


CAFÉ OLIVE ( KENDAL). Tues. 15th January. 6 p.m.
Taste the fresh Mediterranean flavours of Turkey cooked by Metin and Farit, previous owner/chef of The New Moon. Trip advisor rating, excellent.
Private event. Three courses including glass of wine or beer. Please choose your mains only from the attached menu. £19.90.

THE GADDUM ( WINDERMERE). Tues. 12th February. 12.30pm for 1pm. The newest dining experience in the Lake District. Beautiful Brockhole House, with a stunningly restored Arts and Crafts dining room and delightful views across gardens towards Windermere. First class catering team. Private event. See attached set menu. £28.50.

HARE AND HOUNDS (LEVENS). Tues. 26th March. 6 p.m.
16th Century Coaching Inn. Village pub with local cask ales, craft beers and delicious food.
Please choose from the attached menu.  Three courses £22. Two courses £18. 

All venues cater for Special Dietary requirements. Do let me know if you have any.

August 2018

April.  Gilpin Spice.  So popular we booked an additional date. They looked after us extremely well; excellent food, friendly efficient service.

May.   Aulis at L’Enclume.  A small group enjoyed a fantastic experience at the Chef’s Table.  

Lunesdale Arms.  Wonderful food and service.  Couldn’t be faulted.

June.  Quite Simply French.  An enjoyable, social evening had by all.

Former work place of William Wordsworth.  Winner Cumbria Life Food and Drink Awards 2017. Outstanding food; a favourite dining place of this Group. Lunch Tasting Menu £35.

COTTAGE IN THE WOOD (In the heart of Whinlatter Forest).  Weds. 31 Oct & 7 Nov.

April 2018

December. 44 enjoyed an interesting menu at Hirishi's at Gilpin. Another full house. Afternoon 'Tea for Two' was kindly donated to our free prize draw.

February. Castle Dairy. 38 of us completely filled the Dairy. We all gathered for drinks in the Art Gallery before sitting down to lunch in the beautifully renovated dining rooms. Food service and organisation was to be applauded.  A bottle of Shiraz Reserve was donated to our free prize draw.

AULIS AT L'ENCLUME (Cartmel). CHEF'S TABLE AND DEVELOPMENT KITCHEN. Fri. 11th May. 7 p.m  Exceptional culinary creations. Glimpse the magic behind the scenes and cutting edge technology. Chef chats with you and informs as she cooks. Welcomes questions. Tasting Menu £150. Six places only.

LUNESDALE ARMS (Tunstall). Mon. 21st May. Lunch.  Cosy, casual newly renovated Inn situated in the beautiful Lune Valley. Specialises in Southern Mediterranean cuisine, British style. £25  See Menu

QUITE SIMPLY FRENCH (Lancaster). Mon. 25th June. 7 p.m.  Relaxed Modern French Brasserie. Excellent food.  Two Courses incl. bottle of wine £25. Taxi £8.60 return (opt).
